They have nothing intelligent to say on the issue

Another reason Catholic bishops should butt out of any debate on same-sex marriage is that they have nothing intelligent to say on the matter, but only make themselves appear profoundly out of touch with reality.
Take for instance Timothy Michael Dolan the Archbishop of New York who chose to weigh in on same-sex marriage in a recent blog entry - The True Meaning of Marriage. He wrote:
Last time I consulted an atlas, it is clear we are living in New York, in the United States of America – not in China or North Korea. In those countries, government presumes daily to “redefine” rights, relationships, values, and natural law. There, communiqués from the government can dictate the size of families, who lives and who dies, and what the very definition of “family” and “marriage” means.
Well - I'll concede he did get one thing right - New York State is not in China nor North Korea. But he follows that by descending into Orwellian doublethink by equating the severe restrictions of individual rights in China and North Korea with the expansion of individual rights currently being considered by the New York legislature.
Really - who is trying to play the Kim Jong Il role here? Is it the elected state government? Or is it the Vatican-annointed archbishop?
If that's the best Archbishop Nolan can do, then he has nothing worthwhile to say on the matter.
