Meditation 724
The messenger system is still broken.

A little over five years ago, I wrote a couple of Meditations in response to an ad in the personals section of the Globe & Mail.

I was quite surprised this week to receive a response from Pauline Davis, the author of the advertisement, addressing from her perspective the issues raised. I have to admit that I felt somewhat guilty about some of the language I used making assumptions about her sanity, particularly as the woman seems articulate, educated and intelligent. But I cannot help but still regard her as deluded. And it is unfortunate - half a lifetime lost living in a tent in a Toronto ravine (And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God) because she has identified herself as the "woman clothed with the sun" in Revelation 12.

I have to stand by the overall ideas expressed in the two Meditations.

With respect to her call for the Avenger, (Meditation 107) Pauline Davis wrote: "We are sent to the so-called believers, since they do not respond to us we have a right to call for the avenger due to our constant frustrations." I am reminded of 2 Kings 2, verses 23 - 24 where Elisha curses the children who mocked his baldness, and then they are eaten by bears. That's the kind of avengers God sends. A completely unjustified and morally wrong punishment.

Meditation 109 asks "Why did he pick one person?" As Pauline Davis admits, "they do not respond to us." This is the flaw with all prophets. Who listens? Of course, a just god could make it possible for people to listen his prophets, but the biblical record has God doing just the opposite: "But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart." (Exodus 10:20) I won't deny that a very few prophets carrying a message from their version of god have had remarkable success. But given that these messages are not in agreement, at least some, if not all, of those prophets were flat-out wrong. Otherwise there would be one world religion and we would all be living in harmony with it.

Sorry to report this God, but your messenger system is still broken. Perhaps it is time to try something new.
