Newton and Gravity

There are those who think Newton came up with a theory of gravity. Indeed, Newton was able to describe the effects of gravity to a degree that enabled an accurate determination of the orbits of the planets, the moon, and the Earth.

But Newton was troubled because he was unable to identify how gravity worked, particularly in view of the distances involved. In his own words:

The Cause of Gravity is what I do not pretend to know.

I have not been able to discover the cause of these properties of gravity from phenomena, and [so] I frame no hypothesis.

No theory. Not even an hypothesis.
