Who possesses "The Truth?"
by Nikolai Alexandru
It never ceases to amaze me how much effort Christians put into trying to convince us how wrong we are.
When you look at all the posts made on the members' board and the comments made in Talk Back, Ask the Patriarch and the Meditations, you have to wonder, if they alone are the holders of the Truth, then why do they need to convince anyone that it is the Truth. Surely, if it is the truth, then people would naturally gravitate toward it. Wouldn't they?
And yet, regularly someone feels it necessary to expend the energy to write a post, comment or question regarding the Truth of the Bible and the supposed afterlife that it promises in an attempt to convince us that we have been misled. Are they that unsure of their beliefs that they need to prove it to others in order to surround themselves with like-minded individuals who will support them when their faith begins to falter when held up to the Light of Reason.
We don't try to convince anyone that we are right. We simply don't know one way or the other. And that is the point. None of us can know the Truth, nor shall we until we are dead. This includes theists, atheist and agnostics. We Don't Know!
And yes, someone will argue that this message, all the individual web sites created by our members, the members' board itself and the Apathetic Agnostic site are all an attempt to convince others that we alone are the holders of the Truth. And they would be wrong. We are not trying to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals. The only thing that we have in common with each other is our ability to admit that we don't know (whether a Supreme Being exists) and that we don't care (about its existence). Beyond that, we are as different from each other as it is possible for us to be.
Our members come and go. Some will leave forever, and some will eventually return. The only constant in our membership is that we are not trying to convert anyone. Our members and our clergy came to us because they were already here.
